On their journey, they learn about a giant cloud called "the dark thing" that has already taken over several planted, including the one where their father is, Camazotz. The group travels to Camazotz. There, Charles is overpowered and taken over by the dark thing. He leads the rest of the group to Mr. Murray where they too must fight the dark thing. Escaping (group plus Mr. Murray) at the last second to Ixchel, Charles is left prisoner to the dark force.
Once in Ixchel, Meg makes the decision to return to Camazots to rescue her brother, alone. When Meg returns, she realizes she has one power of the Dark thing, that power is love. She focuses on her love for her brother, Charles, and releases him for the dark forces control. They then tessers back to their realm on Earth.

This story is a great one to identify the details of good vs evil. This story is also easy to understand and comprehend for a wide range of ages.
